Wedding string music: Your FAQs answered
You can already picture the ceremony: your guests settling into their seats, the music beginning, and that first walk down the aisle. Choosing who will play that music is one of the next decisions.
If you’re considering a wedding string quartet in Sydney, you may also be wondering whether a trio or duo would suit your day. The right choice depends on the sound you love, your venue, the songs you want and your budget.
At Pursuit 19, we bring together professional Sydney musicians for live string performances tailored to your wedding. Here’s how to compare the options.

What is the difference between a string duo, trio and quartet?
The number of musicians affects the musical texture, the space required and the cost. Here’s a useful starting point:
String duo
What to listen for: A clear melody with a lighter accompaniment
When to consider it: You want an intimate sound, have limited performance space or are working within a smaller budget. Amplification recommended if playing in large, outdoor space
String trio
What to listen for: More room for melody, harmony and rhythmic detail
When to consider it: You want a fuller texture while keeping the ensemble relatively compact. Amplification recommended if playing in large, outdoor space
String quartet
What to listen for: Four interacting parts and greater scope for layered arrangements
When to consider it: You love a rich string sound and want the musical detail of a four-player ensemble. Amplification less important, but still recommended if playing in large, outdoor space
A traditional string quartet has two violins, a viola and a cello. Duo and trio combinations can vary, so ask which instruments would be included in your booking.
The arrangement matters too. A song written thoughtfully for two players can be beautiful in its own right. Listen to examples of the ensemble you’re considering, particularly if you have a favourite song in mind.

Which ensemble will suit your wedding venue?
Start with the performance space and the atmosphere you want to create.
For a small ceremony with guests seated close to the musicians, a duo may provide the intimacy you’re looking for. A trio gives you another musical voice, while a quartet offers a broader texture and a stronger visual presence.
Guest numbers alone won’t tell you which ensemble to choose. A quiet indoor ceremony and a busy outdoor cocktail hour have different sound requirements, even with the same number of people.
For an outdoor wedding in Sydney, discuss the setup with your venue and musicians. Wind, background noise and the distance between the ensemble and guests can affect how clearly the music is heard. Depending on the setting, amplification may be worth discussing.
Before requesting a quote, it helps to know where the musicians would sit, how close they would be to guests, and what sheltered space or wet-weather alternative is available. A photo of the ceremony area can also help us understand your plans.
Can wedding string musicians play modern songs?
Yes—live strings can bring a different character to a song you already love!
Pursuit 19’s recordings include contemporary favourites such as “Die With A Smile”, “You Are The Reason” and “The Night We Met”, alongside classical music and songs such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.
Tell us about your favourites early, so we can find arrangements to suit your ensemble choice. If a song isn’t in our catalogue, a custom arrangement may be possible; this is quoted separately.

How much does live string music cost for a Sydney wedding?
In 2026, Pursuit 19’s wedding packages generally start from $950, though we’ve had bookings for a wide range of budgets. Your quote depends on the ensemble, performance duration and the parts of your day you’d like us to play for.
Think about where live music would matter most to you. If the aisle entrance is your priority, start there. If you love the idea of familiar songs accompanying drinks and conversation afterwards, include that time in your enquiry.

Why book professional Sydney musicians?
There’s more to a wedding performance than playing the right notes. The musicians need to listen to one another, follow the ceremony’s timing and respond smoothly when a moment lasts longer or shorter than expected. All musicians who perform at Pursuit 19 events have extensive experience performing at weddings and special events, which allows our ensembles to be reliable and flexible in the moment.
Careful preparation helps everything come together on the day. We work closely with you to choose songs that suit your ensemble, plan the ceremony’s key musical moments, and coordinate performance details with your venue or planner. From your entrance to the signing and your exit as a married couple, each selection has a place in the flow of your celebration.
